The Annual Killybegs Community Carnival  survives the credit crunch!!!
The Carnival weekend will go ahead over the weekend of Sat 27th and Sunday 28th June 09!
The Killybegs Carnival Group this year are delighted that the local traders have rowed in behind the committee to ensure a weekend of fun filled entertainment is guaranteed
For all. The Carnival Group have secured funding from Donegal County Council again this year but have been unsuccessful with funding from applications from other sources secured previous years. To this end the local traders have agreed to pool resources and organise the open-air street entertainment Saturday and Sunday evenings.

A spokesman for the carnival group David Gallagher said that the committee are delighted that the traders have taken this initiative and are prepared to respond to the challenge. This is a “win win situation. The carnival group can concentrate on the actual parade with the funding secured and the traders will supply the street entertainment”

Workshops for children from the local area are taking place under the guidance of Jackie Byrne and her team while an “outreach” element is also taking place among youth groups from the neighbouring parishes.
Great sounds and rhythms can also be heard resounding from the carpet factory these evenings as the Killybegs Samba Band are rehearsing for the parade. Their numbers have vastly increased this year and they promise to put on a spectacular show. Returning this year again are Cillian and Imelda Peppard from Sligo, the Innishowen Carnival Group and we welcome new to Donegal “Vijaya” from Kildare with whom Killybegs girl Caitriona McGowan works. It is expected that there will be participants from Glencolmcille, Kilcar, Frosses, Ballyshannon, and Donegal Town along with all our home grown talented performers form Killybegs

The format of the weekend has changed this year with the actual parade taking place on the Sunday afternoon at 3.00pm. It will begin at St Catherine’s Vocational School and travel the Shore Road, turn at car park and return same route. Children and Adults wishing to participate in either a performance or stewarding capacity please report to the tech gym at 1.30pm Sunday afternoon.  The parade will be followed by an unveiling of a mural created by the youth of the Drop=In Centre located beside the new Information Centre on the Shore Road.

We are delighted that the ever growing popular seafood Bar-b-q will be lit up again this year under the fish slice of Frankie McClean, Tony Byrne and Neily Gallagher.
We thank these master chefs for their voluntary time and the fish suppliers who donate all the fish.

The Carnival Group would like to at this time wish it’s Chairperson Pat McGinley of the Harbour Bar many years of good health to enjoy his retirement from the pub.
